“Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb…”

(Part One of Two)

When I was working on the last blog about heaven I ran across some scriptures in Revelation that I don’t remember “seeing” before. Not that I hadn’t ever “read them”, but I hadn’t truly “seen” them before! (Not the first time that’s happened and probably not the last!). It really is amazing how we tend to look at scripture through our “doctrinal filters” and not read and understand it for what it actually says (I am so guilty of that!!). In this particular instance it took me by surprise because I wasn’t even looking for it, but I do believe that it was God who brought it to my attention.

These are the scriptures I am referring to: “I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.” Revelation 21:2 And this one in the same chapter: “One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God." Revelation 21:9-10

After I read these scriptures I was like “WHAT”!?? The Holy City of Jerusalem is the Bride of Christ!!?? How can that be?? I have always been taught and believed that WE, the church of believing Christians, is the Bride!! And when I realized what I was reading, my first thought was, “Oh my goodness! Israel is the Bride of Christ, not the church!!” (Again, not seeing it for what it actually said…) But, after doing a little more research I am not so sure about Israel being the bride anymore. I found a website that had some good information and explanations on the church not being the bride, but they do believe Israel is the bride. Here is an excerpt with their explanation: “In the Old Testament, the idea of Israel as the “wife” of God is developed. Though Israel was “married” to God she proved an unfaithful spouse. The nation’s unfaithfulness was expressed as spiritual adultery: it deserted Him for false gods, e.g., Baal, Asherah, Molech, Dagon, etc. Despite these failures, God declared the nation would return to Him, that they would become what He had purposed for them, and that He would fulfill His covenant promises to them. According to God’s promise, the entire nation would become priests (Exodus 19.6) and a faithful wife.” (http://doctrine.org/the-bride-of-christ)

Initially this statement made sense to me, and while I do believe God’s promises about Israel will come to pass, I am still not convinced that she is His “Bride”. His Exodus scripture says: “…you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.'” I am not sure where he got the “faithful wife” part?? While God did refer to himself as a “husband” and spoke of Israel, like as unto “a bride” and “an adulteress wife”, there is no reference to Israel being the “Bride of Christ” in the Bible at all. Here are some scriptures I found that refer to God as husband and Israel as a bride/wife: “…for the LORD will take delight in you, and your land will be married. As a young man marries a maiden, so will your sons marry you; as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you. …" Isaiah 62:1-12 (As a young man…. As a bridegroom…This looks like a metaphor to me…)

For your Maker is your husband-- the LORD Almighty is his name-- the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth. The LORD will call you back as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit-- a wife who married young, only to be rejected," Isaiah 54:5- 12 (Again, “…as if you were a wife…” looks like another comparison statement.)

“Return, faithless people, declares the LORD, "for I am your husband. I will choose you--one from a town and two from a clan-- and bring you to Zion.” Jeremiah 3:14 (This looks pretty clear that He is referring to himself as a husband… but not the “Bridegroom”)

“But like a woman unfaithful to her husband, so you have been unfaithful to me, O house of Israel," declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 3:20 (Again, “… like a women unfaithful to her husband”)

“The time is coming, declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them, " declares the LORD. This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Jeremiah 31:31-33 (He speaks of being a husband again here but then says He is their “God” and they are His people. Not Bridegroom and Bride)

“When you built your mounds at the head of every street and made your lofty shrines in every public square, you were unlike a prostitute, because you scorned payment. 'You adulterous wife! You prefer strangers to your own husband! …” Ezekiel 16:31-33 (A wife and husband but not bride and bridegroom)

“There I will give her back her vineyards, and will make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. There she will sing as in the days of her youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt. In that day, declares the LORD, "you will call me 'my husband'; you will no longer call me 'my master. 'I will remove the names of the Baals from her lips; no longer will their names be invoked.” Hosea 2:15-17 (Another husband term but not bride or bridegroom)

I love the Old Testament and hearing God’s heart and passion for His people and His desire for them to worship Him alone and not look to other god’s to care for them. I believe He speaks of Himself as a “husband” to help the Israelites understand His heart and love for them (considering the phrases “As a bride groom, as if you were a wife, like a women…”). I hear Him say over and over again that He wants to be their God, and for them to be His people, to desire Him ONLY, like in a husband and wife relationship. I personally see His use of “husband and wife” terms as an analogy more than anything else… But if I am wrong, which I very well could be, and they should be considered “Husband and Wife”, why would they go back to being the “Bridegroom and Bride”? What purpose would that serve? The only thing I can think of is that they will be remarried with the new covenant?? But even this is not supported by scripture…

So, after looking at the Old Testament and not really seeing the phrase “Bride of Christ” I went back into the New Testament. Again, I wanted to look at what Jesus said about this subject. What did Jesus say about the church?? Did he mention anything about it? If so, what did He say and what did He call it? After doing this research I found only two references to the church by Jesus: “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, (ekklesia or assembly) and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” Matthew 16:18 – And the second reference: “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.' If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.” Matthew 18:15-17 Okay. But I didn’t find any references to the Bride of Christ by Jesus at all!! So neither the church nor Israel is referred to as “the bride”. Which makes me think, Hmmm… I would think that, if we, or Israel were the bride, that would be an important thing for Jesus to mention, right??

But, here are some descriptive terms Jesus did use in the Gospels. Friends and Guests:

“Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.” Matthew 9:15 In this scripture He was referring to his disciples, who are Jews (and Christians), and He calls them the “guests of the bridegroom…” Not the bride.

“Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” John 15:13

“You are my friends if you do what I command.” John 15:14

“I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.” John 15:15 (See also John 21:5, Matthew 11:19, Matthew 20:13, Matthew 26:50, Luke 5:20, Luke 11:5-8, Luke 14:10, John 11:11)

Jesus tells several parables saying the Kingdom of heaven is like… “… a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. Then he sent some more servants and said, 'Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.' Matthew 22:2-10 In this parable I believe He is saying that the Jews were invited to the “wedding banquet” first and when they refused to come, He sent his servants out to invite anyone on the streets they could find, “both the good and the bad…” this is where the gentiles come in, “…and the wedding hall was filled with guests.” Vs 10

“…But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut…” Matthew 25:10

I have always seen this parable of the ten virgins as “the Christians” waiting for Jesus to come again and become His bride but, now that I really look at it, TEN virgins? Wouldn’t that be polygamy? And it says they went into the wedding banquet… not the “wedding”! They were there waiting for the bridegroom to come so they could attend the banquet and celebrate with the Bride and Groom.

And here are a couple more scriptures to throw into the mix:

“The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom's voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete.” John 3:29 John the Baptist was a Jew, yet he calls himself a “friend attending  the bridegroom”… Not the bride.

And in the book of James it says “And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness," and he was called God's friend.” James 2:23 Abraham was also a Jew and he is referred to as God’s friend… So, looking at these scriptures, it doesn’t look like Israel is the bride. Not once does He call anyone in the Jewish community a “bride” nor does He even allude to it.

“Most we have met do not believe the literal words of Revelation 21 and 22. They haven’t received the kingdom as a little child. They can’t wrap their brains around the fact that "the bride, the Lamb’s wife" is an actual city as she/it is described in wonderful detail.” (Look to the East: http://www.looktotheeast.com/bride_of_christ.htm) I read this statement when I was still thinking the Bride of Christ was Israel and thought to myself, “How weird that he is saying the bride is a ‘city’!!??”… But, the more I thought about it, and the more I searched the scriptures, the more I realized, well, that is what it says!! I was trying to “insert” MY understanding/belief into what it said, but it doesn’t say “Israel” at all, or the “church”! Just that the Bride of the Lamb is the “Holy City of Jerusalem”! Another key point is that the city is described in great detail and, if there were any people in the city as it is descending, I am pretty sure it would have been listed among the contents of the city but there is no mention of any “people” at all. I do believe that, as guests of the Bridegroom, not the Bride, we will dwell with Him in the Holy City of Jerusalem for eternity.

Okay, with all that said, I am not saying I have figured this all out… I certainly still have more questions about all this myself but at this point in time, I am thinking the Revelation scriptures are stating something really clear.

"Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God." Revelation 21:9-10

SHOCKING News about Heaven!!

Ha! I thought I would use a tabloid heading to see what kind of response I got, but don’t stop reading! Ok, so it might not be as “shocking” to you as it was for me… But you tell me…!!

This study was the most interesting and surprising of this three part series (“What is the Kingdom of God?” and “Eternal Life - What good thing must I do” being the other two).

Again, I used only the gospels and what Jesus had to say about this subject. What is interesting is that Jesus never mentions “heaven” in the same way I have always been taught. I was taught that, if you give your life/heart to Jesus, when you die, you will go up to heaven… right?? It has pearly gates and all kinds of valuable stones and streets made of gold…? Well, to my surprise, Jesus never says a word about this!! You would think that if that was true he would have mentioned it at least once! And surprisingly, this is what He DID say about it:  No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven--the Son of Man. John 3:13

Say what!!?? Hmmmm… Then why do we teach people that we go to heaven when we die?? Where did that come from? So, after compiling all of the scriptures pertaining to heaven in the gospels, this is what they DO say about heaven:

God dwells in and speaks from heaven:

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." Matthew 3:16-17, Mark 1:10-11

Father, glorify your name!" Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again." John 12:28

Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. Matthew 16:17

In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

This, then, is how you should pray:  'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:9-10

Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. Matthew 18:19

And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Matthew 23:9

(And here are more scriptures like these: Matthew 5:44-45, Matthew 7:11, Matthew 10:32-33, Matthew 11:25, Matthew 18:14)

Jesus comes from and goes to heaven to sit at the Father’s right hand:

Yes, it is as you say, Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." Matthew 26:64

After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Mark 16:19

As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. Luke 9:51

For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. John 6:38

For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." John 6:33

Angels are in heaven:

No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Matthew 24:36, Mark 13:32

See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. Matthew 18:10

At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. Matthew 22:30, Mark 12:25

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." Luke 2:15

There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. Matthew 28:2

Fire, Satan, Earthquakes and sulfur come down from heaven:

When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?" Luke 9:54

He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Luke 10:18

But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. Luke 17:29

There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven. Luke 21:11

You can store up rewards and treasures in heaven:

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. Luke 12:33

Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Matthew 5:12

Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. Matthew 6:1

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:20

Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."  Matthew 19:21

Your name can be written in heaven:

However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."… Luke 10:20

There is rejoicing in heaven:

I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Luke 15:7

Heaven will disappear:

I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Matthew 5:18

So, what I am reading here is that only God the Father, Jesus and the Angels dwell in heaven. It is God’s throne and earth is his footstool (Matthew 5:34-35). We can store up treasures and rewards in heaven, our names can be written in heaven, lots of great signs and wonders come down from heaven, there is rejoicing in heaven and, ultimately, this heaven and earth will disappear/pass away.

The other aspect of “heaven” that was mentioned was in reference to “our” heaven, like “the stars and planets in the sky” type of heaven. God is the creator of the “heavens and the earth”, which means ours as well as His. Paul mentions that he was taken up to the “third heaven” (2 Corinthians 12:2), so maybe there are more than three heavens?? But nothing is spoken of regarding “us” going to heaven when we die.

Okay, so if those are the scriptures referencing heaven in the gospels, where did we get this idea and imagery of the “heaven” we have been taught about and hope to be in one day?? This is what I found in Revelation: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.” Revelation 21:1 Okay! So that is what He meant when He said heaven would disappear! It is because a NEW heaven and earth will replace them. Then it says: “I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God… And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. Revelation 21:2-3 So, the New Jerusalem is coming down from heaven and God is coming down too, to dwell with men! We aren’t going UP He is coming DOWN (also in Revelation 3:12).

“…He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." He who was seated on the throne said, "I am making everything new!" Revelation 21:2-7 Aha! Here is something we have heard before about heaven; “He will wipe every tear from their eyes and there will be no more death, mourning, crying or pain…” But wait, there’s more! "…The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone… The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass… Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life. Revelation 21:9-27

Did you catch that?? The description I have always heard describing “heaven” is actually the description of the New Jerusalem, coming DOWN from heaven… and is not called heaven at all but the “Holy City of Jerusalem”! And the end of this scripture solidifies it by saying the only people who can enter this city are the people whose names are written in the book of life… Just like we were taught to believe about heaven!

Now don’t that just beat all! We won’t be going up to heaven after all! The “Holy City of Jerusalem” will be coming DOWN to the new earth and God will be dwelling with man! And all this happens AFTER the 1000 year reign… which is another aspect that is not taught (If you haven’t read this part of Revelation, I encourage you to do so). This New Jerusalem must be the place Jesus mentions when He says:” In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.” John 14:2 In the Revelation scripture, the dimensions of this New Jerusalem are enormous!! So, He wasn’t kidding when He said there are many rooms!

So what I want to know is, why are we being taught these things when they are nowhere in scripture?? Who came up with this whole “going up to heaven” idea anyway and why is it being taught to everyone like it is the “truth”?? It is like someone’s idea for a children’s fairy tale story and now it is being taught to adults!! Was this as much of a surprise to you as it was to me? I am embarrassed to admit that I have believed this lie for 35 years! Yes, this is shocking. This is one of those things that make you go “Hmmmmm…. What else have I believed that is a lie??”…

I am so thankful for the Holy Spirit’s leading, guiding and direction during this research for these blogs. I even got a bonus! While searching for these scriptures about heaven, I have discovered even more interesting truths that I am excited to share with you in my next blog! This is certainly an amazing Journey I am on in my search to truly KNOW GOD!

Father, I thank you that all the information I need and all of your truths are available in Your Word and revealed by Your Holy Spirit. I thank you for revealing these truths to those whose hearts are steadfast and desire to know You, our amazing Father. I am looking forward to residing in this amazing city of Jerusalem with YOU for eternity! With much love, Linda :)

What good thing must I do…

…that I may have eternal life?

Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" Why do you ask me about what is good? Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments...  And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. Matthew 19:16-21, Mark 10:17-31 and Luke 18:18-30

Isn't that just like us? Being a recovering “doer” I can so relate to this question! What can I do God to please you enough? What dots do I need to connect, what formula do I mix, or what magic words do I say to make it all good so I can have eternal life?!

 

So, what is eternal life anyway?? Is it a place to go, like heaven? Or just a reference to living forever without time and not dying? Before I did this study on “eternal life” I think I would have described it as an “after life” destination, being with Jesus always and for eternity. But, doing this study has really refined my thinking about this topic!

I love how, when I am working on a subject to blog, I read something in Oswald’s devotions that really speak to the topic I am working with:

April 12

“… Eternal life is the life which Jesus Christ exhibited on the human level. And it is this same life, not simply a copy of it, which is made evident in our mortal flesh when we are born again. Eternal life is not a gift from God; eternal life is the gift of God… Eternal life has nothing to do with time. It is the life which Jesus lived when He was down here, and the only Source of life is the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Oswald always cuts to the heart and TRUTH of the matter. Eternal life is the gift OF God Himself. The ONLY source of life is God through JESUS. His life IN US is eternal life. We need to die to ourselves, emptying all that is not of Him, and allow Him to fill us with HIS life… basically the process of sanctification. More of You Lord and less of me… He must increase and I must decrease (John 3:30).

I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. John 12:24-25

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" What is written in the Law? He replied. "How do you read it?" He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' “You have answered correctly, Jesus replied. ”Do this and you will live." Luke 10:25-28

It’s all about God, all the time. In the above scripture Jesus confirms the experts answer to eternal life as: 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' When you love someone with ALL your heart, mind, soul and strength, you are consumed with them! Jesus says, ”Do this and you will live.” The assumption here is, live “eternally” since that was the inquiry.

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Joh 3:14-17

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him." John 3:36

I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. John 5:24

You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life. John 5:39

We need to “Believe in HIM”. What does that really mean? To believe in Him? I don’t think we fully grasp the meaning of this phrase. It’s not just believing certain things about him (i.e. He is the son of God, born of a virgin, died and rose again…) It’s about putting our faith and trust in HIM. The biggest one being, do we REALLY believe He paid for our sins (and the sins of others)? Just like the expert in the law, we are continuously trying to earn salvation! We even think that if we have a wealth of knowledge “about” Him, then that is all we need (see John 5:39). But is that the same thing as “Believing IN HIM”? Believing that He will do what He says He will do (not what we want Him to do)? And is who He says He is (not who WE think He should be)? The bottom line is, if we really believed what we say we believed, our lives would be very different!

And then we get into some interesting, if not downright difficult, scriptures:

Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." John 4:13-14

Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval." John 6:27

Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. John 6:53-54

…eat my flesh and drink my blood…?? What?? Who does that!!?? No wonder most of His disciples left Him at this point. While this may sound a bit cannibalistic, this was a really good word picture Jesus painted for us all. He wants us to literally CONSUME Him... He wants us to eat His flesh and drink His blood which I think of as eating His words, His Truth, His LOVE, His LIFE, and His SPIRIT which is the LIVING WATER for us all… Consuming Him every day of our lives. Most of us Christians spend almost all of our days taking in and consuming mostly what the world offers and not the Truths of Jesus. Have we turned away too?

For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." John 6:38-40

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. John 10:27-28

A good part of “loving” and “believing” in someone is obedience (If you love me, you will obey what I command. John 14:15). Jesus was obedient and did what His Father asked of Him. He died to Himself so that He could die for us. In the same way, I don’t think we can have eternal life until we die, giving up “our” life, so that we can be “born again” into HIS "eternal" life. It is in this way that we will KNOW HIM, intimately, and not just know about Him…

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John 17:1-3

So, to wrap this up, I now would define eternal life as a “Person”, the Person of Jesus Christ. Eternal life is KNOWING the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent, not just knowing about Him. Eternal life is “dying” and being born again into HIS life, consuming and living off of His words of Truth, obeying His commands, and believing IN HIM for all things at all times... This, of course, is also a process :)

Father, I thank you that YOU are eternal life and all who love you and truly know you have eternal life with you! Help me Lord to consume more and more of YOU each day and less of the world. With much love, your daughter Linda :)
