The Plumb Line…

Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

As I have mentioned before, I have been listening to the gospels and Revelation over and over again because Jesus speaks to us in these books. I have LOVED doing this because it helps me get to know Jesus, and imprint on Him and learn what is important to HIM. After doing this for almost three years now I am getting a much better feel for His truths and replacing the lies I have believed with the truth according to HIM. This has been a remarkable journey!! To say that it has been transforming would be an understatement. I guess you can say that I am becoming more and more familiar with the “Plumb line” of our faith! Our “True North”, the ROCK and foundation for our lives.

I used the term “Plumb line” because that is what came to mind when I wanted to write this blog. Here is the definition of plumb line:  1:a line (as of cord) that has at one end a weight (such as a plumb bob) and is used especially to determine verticality 2:a line directed to the center of gravity of the earth :a vertical line

And along those same lines here is a “chalk line” definition: A chalk line or chalk box is a tool for marking long, straight lines on relatively flat surfaces, much farther than is practical by hand or with a straightedge. They may be used to lay out straight lines between two points, or vertical lines by using the weight of the line reel as a plumb line. It is an important tool in carpentry…  (I thought “important tool in carpentry” was a cool reference since Jesus was a carpenter too!)

As I understand it, these tools are used to determine the straightest, truest vertical and horizontal lines possible. To make sure that everything that is done or built afterwards is straight and true for a good solid structure and foundation.

So, with that said, every once in a while I will go from listening to the gospels to listening to the whole New Testament, because I know there is a lot of good stuff in the other books as well. But, a very interesting thing has happened the last couple of times I have done this! I am finding that there are times that what is said in the other books do not always line up with what Jesus says! Are you surprised!? I know I was! And I will definitely give you some examples in a bit so you can see what I mean for yourself.

If Jesus is the “Plumb line” on which we build the foundation of our faith, then I think it is super important that we KNOW what He said, don’t you? Yes, yes… I too thought I knew what Jesus said, but what I am finding out is that I really DIDN’T know Jesus’ words the way I thought I did, but only what I was taught and told by others, and then I too passed that misinformation on. Yes, we were well intentioned but we learned it wrong from someone else and now we are playing the “telephone” game, passing on information from others, adding our own thoughts and misunderstandings as they go through our own doctrinal filters without checking with our Plumb Line. And then we try to build our faith on these rickety foundations that will only fall apart when tested. I think we can all say we have experienced something like that at some point in time, and then we wondered what happened, right?! We might have even blamed God for hurtful and painful events and may even still be angry at Him for something we thought we understood about Him or His promises that didn’t happen the way we thought it would/should!

Yes, I DO believe that God put the Bible together and that it is ALL HIS Word, and everything that is in the Bible is supposed to be there! But, maybe there are some things in there that we have to discern as to what we will apply to our lives as truth and what is just something said by the person who wrote it? Like in all things of “faith” we have a choice as to what we will believe. Let’s take the apostle Paul for example. As I read his writings there are times I think to myself, “WOW! That was brilliant and definitely Spirit inspired!” And other times he says things and I think to myself “Ok, that was just ‘Paul’ and not so much Spirit led”.

Don’t get me wrong here, I LOVE Paul and think he wrote some amazing and insightful stuff, and I don’t mean to pick on him, but he is a very good example of the point I want to make. We tend to think of the Biblical characters, especially the apostles, as “special” and almost super human but they were just normal people, like you and me, who God used to do His work. Paul, and the others, were just regular guys, and therefore capable of making mistakes, well-meaning but just human. But Jesus was God AND man and He didn’t make mistakes. So, whose words and instructions should we KNOW, pay the most attention to and follow? Which books of the Bible should we know more than any others?

Paul was raised as a Pharisee and was most definitely what we would call a “type A personality”! He did everything with his whole being! He even said that of himself in these scriptures: “My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee.” Acts 23:6.  “…circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless...” Philippians 3:5. And I think that is exactly why Jesus chose him! Because whatever he did, he did it with his whole heart! He was ALL IN all the time! But, as passionate as he was, he was still human, and not perfect.

So, as I have listened to some of Paul’s letters I can’t help but think that maybe he slipped in and out of his “Pharisaical roots”. There are times when he preached grace, love and forgiveness but then every once in a while he slips into the law, legalism and religion. Also in his humanness he confesses several times of being “afraid” and in that fear he tries to “control” the thinking and actions of the churches, enforcing rules and regulations to keep the people in line instead of trusting God with them. And in his humanness he gets hurt, frustrated and angry, just like us! But, I don’t see Jesus doing that at all! Jesus trusts God and the Holy Spirit in all ways and at all times. And of course I don’t have to tell you that there was NO fear in Him. He was not intimidated by men or demons and only did what the Father told Him to do in absolute love, kindness, mercy, grace and compassion. And He is our example of how we need to behave and treat others. So we really need to KNOW what He said and use HIS words as our foundation and True North, not Paul, Peter, James or John, not our Pastors, and not anyone else in our lives. We have to take EVERYTHING back to our ROCK and Plumb Line to make sure we have it right. I am not saying to disregard what others say but to line it up with what Jesus said to make sure it matches up with His words of Truth.

Ok, as promised earlier, here are a couple of scriptural comparisons between Paul and Jesus:

Paul:
Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. Titus 3:10

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them.” 2 Timothy 3:1-5

Jesus:

“You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? ....” Matthew 5:38-48

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:34-35

What I hear Paul saying is to have nothing to do with people that are sinners and broken, and not exhibiting what he would consider “Christian” behavior. Tom says he thinks Paul has a hard time with allowing people to be “in process” and in transition. Since Paul’s experience was sudden and miraculous he may not understand that it takes most us of YEARS to overcome addictions, past hurts and brokenness. What Jesus is saying is that we need to LOVE everyone, at all times and at all stages of our journey, even our enemies and those who are not easy to be around, you know, those difficult people that we ALL struggle with.

Paul:
“I have written you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people--not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat. What business is it of mine to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside. "Expel the wicked man from among you." 1 Corinthians 5:9-13

“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? …” 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

Jesus:
“But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.Luke 6:27-31

While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Matthew 9:10-13

“Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” Luke 6:36-37

“For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Matthew 7:2

Again, Paul is placing himself in the seat of “judgment” on believers AND unbelievers who don’t meet his criteria, saying not to have anything to do with them but that is exactly who Jesus hung out with! Jesus was criticized for spending time with tax collectors and sinners but He said to the religious leaders, It is not the healthy who need a doctor but the sick. And then He says In the same way you judge, you will be judged…… Oh boy.

Paul:
But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 11:3

For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder. I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved over many who have sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery in which they have indulged.” 2 Corinthians 12:20-21

“For this reason, when I could stand it no longer, I sent to find out about your faith. I was afraid that in some way the tempter might have tempted you and our efforts might have been useless.” 1 Thessalonians 3:5

Jesus:
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:27 (There are MANY scriptures of Jesus saying “do not be afraid”, and you can do a search for them, but I just picked out these two)

In our “fear” we do things and make decisions that are not beneficial or Godly. I tell the ladies I meet with not to make decisions based on fear, anger, guilt, shame or condemnation because they rarely turn out well. But instead to wait for “peace” and for God’s leading. I think Paul made some emotional, “knee jerk” reactions and decisions with the churches as he was trying to guide them. I know I have done that very same thing and have had to apologize many times!! Ministering to people can be really hard and frustrating but Jesus was always steady and confident, full of love and always went right to the heart of the matter, which was their need for Him, NOT condemning them for their sin.

Paul:

“… A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through childbearing--if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.” 1 Timothy 2:9-15

Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. Now the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self- controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. …” 1 Timothy 3:1-10

“Even though you have ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the gospel.” 1 Corinthians 4:15

Jesus:

“Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave--just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Matthew 20:25-26

“But you are not to be called 'Rabbi,' for you have only one Master and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth 'father,' for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. Nor are you to be called 'teacher,' for you have one Teacher, the Christ. Matthew 23:8–10

“When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say." Luke 12:11-12

“It is written in the Prophets: 'They will all be taught by God.' Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.” John 6:45

In the 1 Timothy 2 scripture, about women, this was most definitely “Paul” laying down rules and laws that were not taught by Jesus… But actually, I DO agree that neither a woman NOR a man should have ANY authority over us… ONLY God. When we elevate a man, or woman, it only places them in a position to FALL. How many Pastors and ministers over the years have you heard of that have fallen!? We were never meant to be in authority over each other but to be brothers and sisters in the Lord. Paul says that setting our hearts on being an overseer is a noble task but Jesus specifically says NOT to do that. We have only one teacher and that is Jesus and one Father and that is God.

In the 1 Timothy 3 scripture (which I cut short but you can look it up and read it all) he is laying down a very LONG list of the standards and qualifications of what an overseer should be but Tom commented that those sounded more like the qualifications for a Pharisee! Looking good on the outside but there’s no way to know his heart. In the earlier days, right after Jesus ascended, the only qualifications for a deacon was that they be “full of the Spirit and wisdom” (Acts 6:3) Jesus always looks at the heart. HE chose uneducated fishermen, a tax-collector, a rejected woman at the well who had been married 5 times, a demon possessed man, a leper, a blind man, etc. (The First Evangelists... How low can you go). The only qualifications were that they loved him and wanted to follow Him. It was their testimony of what God did for them that had power not their qualifications according to man. (“They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony…” Revelation 12:11)

Can you see what I am saying now? In Paul’s scriptures he is saying not to associate with sinners, having nothing to do with certain people, assigning overseers, making decisions based on “fear” and trying to control people with rules, regulations and standards that Jesus didn’t teach. With Jesus, He was ALL about hanging out with the sinners, loving, serving and trusting God with teaching and directing His followers. Whose instructions are we to follow??

Oh, how quickly we can fall back on our “human understanding” and leave the teachings of Jesus! If Paul did it, how much more will we if we aren’t intentional and determined to get to know our Plumb Line! I have SO been guilty of passing on incorrect information because I didn’t know Jesus like I should have and relied on others to teach me, so now I am determined to know ONLY Him, the truth and nothing but the truth, and I am taking responsibility for my own relationship, trusting God and the Holy Spirit to reveal the things I need to know as I listen to HIS words.

I certainly don’t want to sound too simplistic here. What Jesus says to do is HARD and we certainly CAN’T do it on our own! Isn’t it so much easier to not have anything to do with sinners and difficult Christians, and make up rules and regulations to protect ourselves and have more control over things? Oh yeah, it is! And we certainly can’t give what we don’t have! And if we don’t have a relationship with Jesus that pours out of us love, grace and forgiveness than we probably shouldn’t have anything to do with those people until we DO have it!

Tom made a great point regarding the scripture when Jesus reached out and touched the leper, he said that Jesus wasn’t intimidated by his sin and it wasn’t contagious to Him, but that His love and healing was more contagious to those around Him! What a great visual! WE would be terrified to touch a leper because we wouldn’t want to “catch” it, but Jesus knew His healing was more contagious than the leprosy! When we are FULL of GOD and His grace and wisdom we will be contagious too! So, we can be around anyone when we are aligned with our Plumb Line and not get impatient, frustrated or hurt and we will not be swayed or pulled into undesired sin and debauchery but instead, we can pull them into the Kingdom! As Oswald says, when we have the RIGHT relationship with Him and when we are completely and totally surrendered and relying only on Jesus, our ministry to Him happens as naturally as breathing!

Here is another scripture from Jesus that confirms what I am saying:
Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say? (Ouch!) I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete." Luke 6:46-49

Thanks for hanging in there with me! I hope it was worth it to you! But please, don’t take MY word for it, find out for yourself! Read the gospels and Revelation over and over again, for years! Hear what Jesus says and you will be amazed at the transformation you will experience!! I am looking forward to what He will show me next!  :)

Again, MOST of what Paul says is brilliant and very much Holy Spirit led so I will leave you with one of my favorites:

“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace.” Acts 20:24

Father, I am so thankful for your grace and forgiveness! I am also thankful for your Truth that sets us free from sin and death. I am thankful that Your Truth brings Peace and Freedom! I pray for all of us Lord that we will endeavor to know only You and Your Truth. Help us to remove the lies we have believed and give us courage, strength and perseverance to pursue You, and only You, at all times, at all costs so we will know without a doubt the Plumb Line of our faith, our True North and the Rock of our salvation! In your name I pray, amen!

Greater Things…. Elevation and upgrade

“I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.” (John 14:12)

Being raised in the world it is so easy, and so natural, to think the way the world does. No matter how hard I try I tend to get caught up in the world’s definition of things. At the beginning of this year I felt the Lord’s words for us for 2017 were “Elevation and Upgrade”. So, my ever present and persistent flesh was like “Woohoo! NOW we’re talk’n!” I probably don’t have to tell you what I was picturing in my mind as to all the ways we could be “elevated and upgraded”! Even though I have tried to avoid coming to conclusions, trying NOT to form a mental picture and expectation of what God has in store for me, I still do it!

As I listen to Jesus in the gospels I hear Him saying things that can be so easily considered contradictory or even understood differently than what He is actually meaning (i.e. we see through the temporal perspective instead of the eternal perspective). One day, after listening to the scripture above, (“I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.John 14:12), I couldn’t help but think “God’s definition of “greater” must be very different than mine!” We automatically think that, if Jesus is healing and casting out demons, then “greater” for us would mean even more amazing things than He did!! Our definition of “greater” would mean that we will become famous healers and go around the world healing everyone and casting out more demons than Jesus did! MORE miracles, MORE people are healed, MORE deliverances and MORE people are raised from the dead… But, as much as I have wanted to believe this, I just don’t see it happening anywhere in this “greater” way. Yes, people are healed and delivered but, “greater” than what Jesus did?? And the famous quote of Inigo Montoya comes to mind again saying “I don’t think that word means what you think it means”!

And then a bunch of scriptures started to come to mind, like:
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” John 13:12-17

“And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 18:3-4

Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave-- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Matthew 20:26-28

The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Matthew 23:11-12

“But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest. Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all." Mark 9:34-35

Looking at these statements that Jesus makes, He is clearly stating that “greater” in the Kingdom of Heaven is being last, a servant, having a childlike faith and humility, and having no need or desire to exalt himself. Jesus is our example of humility, laying his life down as a ransom for many. So, with this in mind, now I am trying to wrap my mind around what HE would define as miracles that are “greater” than what He did. Since it is NOT about “exalting” ourselves or greater numbers or bigger miracles, maybe it is just the opposite and it is quietly serving in ways that are not acknowledged or noticed? Maybe it is loving the unlovable and rejected people of the world? Maybe Mother Teresa nailed it! How many miracles of “service and love” did she perform in her lifetime!? She may not have “healed” people outright in miraculous signs and wonders, but how many were transformed spiritually and emotionally by her care, time and love!? I can’t say I have figured this out… but, what do you think? If God’s perspective is “eternal”, and our physical body is “temporal” and doomed anyway, why would an eternal God focus on healing our bodies? Of course it would be important to us but I don’t think God is on the same page as us in that regard. We may get a healing but ultimately our bodies will die. But our emotional and spiritual healing will last through eternity!

Yes, Jesus did heal people! He told John the Baptist’s disciples when they asked "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?" Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.” (Matthew 11:5). But, I believe He did those amazing miracles to show them who HE was! Only the Son of God could do the things He did with the Love and compassion He had for people. He WAS the One who was to come and these signs and wonders proved it! We don’t have to prove anything like this, he already did it. His command to US was to LOVE ONE ANOTHER as He has loved us (John 15:12). Which, in this day and age is most definitely a “greater” miracle!

And if that doesn’t convince us, then we have these scriptures to tell us a little more about what Jesus thought about miracles:
The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name." He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." Luke 10:17-19

Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'”  Matthew 7:21-23

“Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you." He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” Matthew 12:38-39

What I understand Him saying through these scriptures is, it is not the miracles and signs and wonders that He wants from us! While He may do those things through us, He wants us to focus on our relationship with HIM and each other, loving HIM with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength, and loving our neighbors as ourselves and trusting Him with the rest.

So needless to say, as this year is coming to a close, our “elevation and upgrade” did not come in the way we thought it would! But, we have been humbled more and we have loved and served more and in that way we feel like we are doing God’s will and are closer to God than we were at the beginning of this year. I guess, for me, that truly is my goal. My flesh would like things to be more “comfortable” but my heart and my spirit are willing to do whatever it takes to KNOW God in new and wonderful ways! Even if it means that I will be an unnoticed servant, a slave and the very last of all.

The First Evangelists... how low can you go?

Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” John 4:29

When you think of “evangelists” who comes to mind first?? Ok, I am sure you have thought of all the usual suspects, but did you think of people back in Jesus’ time? Yes, the disciples but… there were others even before them! Can you think of any? Let’s see.

Tom and I were talking one day and he was getting ready for his group and the Lord was really speaking to him about how Jesus went out of his way for the unloved, disliked, rejects of the world. This is a very important point for the guys that he works with because that is exactly how they feel!! Unloved, disliked and rejected by everyone around them, their friends, wife, family, church friends, leaders of the church and sometimes their Pastors (thankfully not all of them!). So, they automatically think that Jesus feels the same way about them and have a hard time pursuing a relationship with Him. But, what is so cool about Jesus is, those are the very people He goes to! Yes! He goes to the physically, emotionally and spiritually bankrupt people that the religious Pharisees have cast out and rejected.

Before we get to my selected evangelists, I would like to address the obvious ones that Jesus chose as His “disciples”, I say chose because that is what he says in John 15:16 “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit”. These were fisherman! Rough, gruff, dirty men who were “Unschooled and ordinary men” (Acts 4:13)! He didn’t pick from the knowledgeable, wealthy, clean cut group from the Pharisee school… So, it makes me wonder, why do we?

Ok, first up on my list is a woman. Yes, a woman! In Jesus’ time that is truly unheard of! Can you guess who this is? I probably gave it away with the first scripture. Yep, the woman at the well. In my journey to know God I have become more and more aware of the fact that NOTHING is a coincidence or accidental! God does not waste a moment, movement or word but EVERYTHING that happens, is done or is said for His purpose in His amazing plan, and this little rest stop at the well is no exception! Jesus KNEW who was coming to the well and he was there for HER. Who was this woman? She was an outcast and rejected by the towns people so much so that she had to come to the well to get water when there was NO ONE else there. He spoke to her kindly, lovingly, and did not cast judgment or stones at her. Typically men did not speak to women and additionally Jews didn’t speak to Samaritans but Jesus did not follow man’s rules but did only what the Father told Him to do. In the Biblical account, in addition to kindness, He gave her words of LIFE, freedom and Living Water! He made such an impact on her that she went and told the town’s people all about him! “Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony, "He told me everything I ever did." So when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers. They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world." (John 4:39-42).  He chose her too! She was one of the first evangelists! He didn’t choose the qualified, but he qualified the chosen.

Next up has to be one of our favorites. He is one of the lowest of low, so low he couldn’t even live among the living but lived in a grave yard! Tortured, naked, demon possessed, screaming, cutting himself with stones and broken in every way imaginable. “…no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.” (Mark 5:3-4). But Jesus had an appointment with this man and nothing was going to stop Him! Even as they were crossing the lake to the region of the Gerasenes to meet this man a furious storm came upon them and they feared for their lives. But Jesus spoke to the wind and the waves and stopped the storm (Mark 4:35-41). This man was important and Jesus was not to be detained from meeting with him. Jesus did not see this man the way everyone else did, He saw him through the eyes of love, grace and compassion and knew just what he needed. Just like He spoke to the storm and calmed the raging waters and the wind on the lake, Jesus spoke and cast out the demons and then spoke truth and life into this tortured and rejected man! And when He was done “... they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid… As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.” (Mark 5:15-20).

Initially the people were so afraid of Jesus because of what he did with that man that they asked him to leave. I don’t think He was surprised at this, I think He knew all along that this man was the only appointment he had there. But, after the man of the tombs did what Jesus told him to do, and told everyone what Jesus had done for him, the next time Jesus was in that area, he fed 4000 people who had gathered to hear him (Mark 7:31, 8:1-10)! One of the first evangelists was a broken, rejected, unloved, demon possessed man! He didn’t choose the qualified, but he qualified the chosen.

The third person was a very small man by the name of Zacchaeus. While he wasn’t as bad off as the man of the tombs, he wasn’t very well liked by many people because he was a chief tax collector and made himself wealthy doing it! Everyone saw him as a ruthless sinner and low life but to Jesus, he was the perfect evangelist. He had an appointment with a low life, cheating tax collector and actually invited himself to his house! Because Zacchaeus was so short he had to climb a tree to see Jesus through the crowd, and when “Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today." So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly. All the people saw this and began to mutter, "He has gone to be the guest of a 'sinner.' "  But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount." Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost." (Luke 19:1-10) I believe Zacchaeus was no different than the women at the well or the man in the tombs, Jesus touched his heart in a way that no other did, or could, with love, acceptance, approval, kindness and grace and transformed him to be another evangelist who told everyone what Jesus had done for him!

Jesus loved the unlovable and touched the untouchable without flinching or fear. How about the leper!? Jesus could have “spoken” words of healing to this man but instead, he TOUCHED him! An unclean, contagious leper! This was not an accident and He was fully aware of what He was doing. He was making a point to everyone around who was watching Him, there was nothing that He could not do and there was NO ONE He did not love or care for. “A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean." Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" Immediately he was cured of his leprosy. Then Jesus said to him, "See that you don't tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them." (Matthew 8:1-4) Even though Jesus said not to tell anyone, you KNOW he did!! Another evangelist sent out to tell people about Jesus!

How many more of these encounters and appointments did Jesus have that were not recorded? I believe there were many, many more.

So, how about you? Do you feel unloved, unqualified, rejected and cast out? Then I believe that Jesus has an appointment with you!! For, it is by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony that we overcome the enemy (Revelation 12:11)!

EASY is a Four Letter Word...

“And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." 'But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'”  Luke 12:19-20

I have recently committed to memorizing John 15… again. This is my second attempt as I felt led to do this a couple of years ago and started it, but didn’t complete it because, for me, memorizing scripture is NOT easy! This time, I am determined to get her done! Last night I memorized verse 8 “This is to my Fathers glory, that you will bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples” (and yes, I typed it by memory, ha!). I was thinking and meditating on this verse the other day and my thought process went down the “fruit” and “disciple” road which ultimately brought me to the “EASY is a four letter word” epiphany.

Fruit
First, let’s take a look at fruit. That is a big word and a very big deal to God. It is listed 50 times in the NIV New Testament! Jesus talks about fruit a lot. In verse two of John 15 Jesus says that our Father, the Gardener, cuts off every branch that bears NO fruit, and He prunes every branch that does bear fruit so that it will be even MORE fruitful. We are the branches and Jesus is the vine, our job is to remain in Him and bear fruit and any branch that doesn’t is cut off. So if fruit is that important to God, fruit should be pretty darn important to us too! He says, if we remain in Him and He remains in us, we WILL bear much fruit. Apart from Him we can do NOTHING (vs 5). Any branch that doesn’t remain in Him is like a branch that is thrown away and withers. Such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned (vs 6). So, in order to bear fruit, we must REMAIN in Him and Him in us. Is this easy? NOT. And how do we “remain” in him? He tells us in verse 10; If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love.

So what is fruit and how do we produce it? Is it donating lots of money? Doing “good” works? Feeding the poor? Leading people to Christ? Maybe. Can we do those things and it NOT be “fruit”? I believe that is very possible. If we are not doing them in “Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control”, the Fruit of the Spirit, it would NOT be considered “fruit”! If we are doing it in our own way, strength and timing, and not God’s, or out of a selfish desire to look good, or to impress people, I don’t think it would be considered fruit either. So, is it easy to produce good fruit? NOT.

Disciples
Now let’s look at disciples. Is being a disciple of Jesus easy?? Heck no! Just look at these scriptures and what He requires of His disciples:
“Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head." Matthew 8:19-20

Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father." But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."  Matthew 8:21-22

“If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters--yes, even his own life--he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:26-27

“Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family." Jesus replied, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." Luke 9:61-62

“Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” Matthew 10:38

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.”  Matthew 16:24-25

“Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." Matthew 19:21

Are Jesus’ words “easy”? I don’t think so.

Easy

So, who has heard of the slogan “The EASY button”? That is exactly what the world peddles. Take life easy! Relax, you deserve it! Want to lose weight? Just take a pill! Or, “Just do these 3 EASY steps to lose 10 pounds… send us your money and lose weight today!” “No more exercising! Just follow these EASY instructions and the pounds will melt off your body!” Don’t want to cook tonight? Just order out! Fast food drive-thrus everywhere! We have tons of prepackaged easy meals at our fingertips! No more slaving all day in the kitchen, take it EASY and just order a pizza to be delivered to your door! You want that latest gadget or electronic toy but can’t afford it? No need to wait, it’s easy, just put it on your credit card! Oh, so, so tempting. How many of us have fallen for one or more of these EASY solutions over and over again? I know I am not the only one!! :P  Let me ask you. What is the fruit of all of these “easy” ways? Does it make you stronger or more patient? Or do you feel better in the long run? Do we really loose those extra unwanted pounds for good or just the cash we spent on the pills or programs? Are we more compassionate, loving, kind, healthy or happy? Not that I have experienced. I think the hardest part is not buying into and believing these very “tempting” lies because we WANT them to work! It is all around us every day! Everywhere we turn we hear these voices begging us to just do things the EASY way! After a while we certainly can get weak and give in.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think everything should be hard. There are times when “easy” is just fine. But, if the truth be told, isn’t anything that is valuable and beneficial VERY difficult to do? The things I put the most time and effort into are important to me. I spend a great deal of time in the kitchen because my health, and how I feel about myself, is important to me. I spend time listening to the Word and talking to God because HE is important to me. I spend time in the garden because I get a great deal of pleasure and benefit from that time and effort. I spend time working on ME, my emotional and spiritual health, and my marriage because these are very important to me. Is it easy to exercise on a regular basis, eat the right food every day and resist the temptation to eat junk and sweets? Or to see the yuck in my heart that needs to be refined so that I can be a good wife, person and servant of the Lord? No way Jose!! But is it worth it? Oh yeah! For me it is! Every moment of it.

As it is in the natural, so it is in the Spiritual. Oswald’s July 7th devotion was saying the same thing I am saying here! I love it when God confirms what He is saying to me!

All Efforts of Worth and Excellence Are Difficult
Matthew 7:13-14 – “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.”

“If we are going to live as disciples of Jesus, we have to remember that all efforts of worth and excellence are difficult. The Christian life is gloriously difficult, but its difficulty does not make us faint and cave in --- it stirs us up to overcome. Do we appreciate the miraculous salvation of Jesus Christ enough to be our utmost for His highest --- our best for His glory?

God saves people by His sovereign grace through the atonement of Jesus, and "it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure" (Phi_2:13). But we have to "work out" that salvation in our everyday, practical living (Phi_2:12). If we will only start on the basis of His redemption to do what He commands, then we will find that we can do it. If we fail, it is because we have not yet put into practice what God has placed within us. But a crisis will reveal whether or not we have been putting it into practice. If we will obey the Spirit of God and practice in our physical life what God has placed within us by His Spirit, then when a crisis does come we will find that our own nature, as well as the grace of God, will stand by us.

Thank God that He does give us difficult things to do! His salvation is a joyous thing, but it is also something that requires bravery, courage, and holiness. It tests us for all we are worth. Jesus is "bringing many sons to glory" (Heb_2:10), and God will not shield us from the requirements of sonship. God's grace produces men and women with a strong family likeness to Jesus Christ, not pampered, spoiled weaklings. It takes a tremendous amount of discipline to live the worthy and excellent life of a disciple of Jesus in the realities of life. And it is always necessary for us to make an effort to live a life of worth and excellence.”

I LIKE that! “It is ALWAYS necessary for us to make an effort to live a life of worth and excellence.”!! That is what I am talking about!! And I also love this line “Thank God that He does give us difficult things to do! His salvation is a joyous thing, but it is also something that requires bravery, courage, and holiness. It tests us for all we are worth.”!!

Biblical search

Just out of curiosity I decided to do a little search to see how many times the word “easy” is listed in the New Testament. Can you guess?? Only 2 times! And I already listed the first one, Luke 12:19-20, at the beginning of this blog (take a quick peak again as a refresher) and here is the second one:

“For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11:30

Now isn’t that interesting?! Did you see what I am seeing? It seems like the Luke scripture is depicting the world’s way and the Matthew scripture is God’s way. The Greek word for “easy” in Matthew is chrēstos and it is only translated as “easy” in this one scripture (your version may vary). It is used 7 times in the New Testament, the other six are; Kind two times, better once, good once, goodness once and gracious once. So, maybe we can say this scripture better by saying “His yoke is “better, good, gracious and kind” as opposed to “easy”. That kind of puts a different light and connotation to this verse, doesn’t it?

In the Luke scripture the word for easy in the Greek is anapauō (the King James translates as “ease”). This word is used 12 times in the New Testament and is translated the other 11 times as, rest 6 times, refreshed 3 times, refresh 1 time and resteth 1 time. So the Luke scripture using the word easy is a bit closer to the original word; “I will rest, refresh myself and resteth… eat, drink and be marry…”

For a contrast and comparison I looked to see how many times these other words were listed:

Endure – 36, Endurance – 12 = 48, Patient – 18, Suffering – 53, Trials – 8, Perseverance – 11, Faith – 266, Trust – 85… That should tell us something… just say’n…

Jesus knew our journey wasn’t going to be easy so that is why He asked us to have faith in Him, to trust Him and persevere with patient endurance through the trials we will encounter because he KNEW it wasn’t going to be easy. He told us in John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” I didn’t hear Him say, “Life is a piece of cake! Relax, rest and take it easy!” In my journey to know God, He has asked me to do some REALLY HARD things and being obedient, and doing those hard things, certainly wasn’t easy. Being a disciple is NOT easy but it is OH SO worth it!! Oswald says, unless we are completely and utterly dependent on HIM we will never know when He is missing... DOH! It may be HARD to be obedient, letting go of control and our own way of doing things, but it is SO very worth it. This is a good time to read Oswald’s line again: “Thank God that He does give us difficult things to do! His salvation is a joyous thing, but it is also something that requires bravery, courage, and holiness. It tests us for all we are worth.

So, the next time someone says, “You shouldn’t work so hard at that, you should just do it the easy way!” or “Just push the easy button”, remember, EASY is a four letter word!  :)

“And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." 'But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'”  Luke 12:19-20
